KEF Speakers, Designed and Installed in Naples
239 Smart is a Naples, FL custom electronic systems integrator and a KEF Approved Dealer. We design, supply, and install the full KEF lineup, from invisible in-ceiling speakers and THX certified home theaters to Reference series floorstanders and wireless hi-fi, across Naples, Bonita Springs, Marco Island, and Estero.
What Is KEF?
KEF is a British loudspeaker manufacturer founded in 1961 by Raymond Cooke, a former BBC engineer. The name comes from Kent Engineering & Foundry, the Maidstone company whose grounds held KEF's first workshop. More than six decades later, KEF still develops its technology in Maidstone, and its flagship Reference and Blade speakers are hand-built there.
Where most speaker brands buy drivers from outside suppliers and assemble them into a box, KEF engineers its own drivers, cabinets, and electronics. That control is why a KEF in-ceiling speaker and a KEF floorstander can sound like members of the same family: the same engineering team voices both.
Why Audiophiles Put KEF at the Top of the List
Plenty of speakers sound impressive from the perfect chair. KEF's reputation was built on sounding right from every chair, and on publishing engineering papers rather than adjectives to prove it.
Uni-Q Driver Array
Uni-Q places the tweeter at the acoustic center of the midrange or woofer cone, so highs and mids leave the speaker from a single point. The payoff is consistent, natural sound across a wide area instead of one narrow sweet spot. For in-ceiling audio, that also means fewer speakers can cover a room evenly.
Metamaterial Absorption Technology
Introduced in 2020 and developed with Acoustic Metamaterials Group, MAT is a maze-like structure behind the tweeter that KEF says absorbs 99% of the unwanted sound radiating from its rear. The LS50 Meta was the first speaker in the world to use it. It now sits inside the 12th generation Uni-Q across Blade, Reference, R, Q, and LS models.
Measured, Not Guessed
KEF was among the first speaker makers to bring computer measurement into loudspeaker design, and it still shows. Every pair of The Reference is matched within half a decibel to a laboratory-maintained reference standard. That level of consistency is rare at any price.
A Brief History of KEF
Sixty-plus years, one through line: use new materials and real measurement to get closer to the original performance.
A workshop in Maidstone
Raymond Cooke founds KEF in a Nissen hut on the grounds of Kent Engineering & Foundry, with a focus on experimenting with new materials to reproduce recordings more naturally.
The BBC connection
KEF takes on exclusive manufacture of the BBC's LS5/1a monitor, then introduces its B110 and T27 drivers, which the BBC later selects for the LS3/5a.
The Reference is born
KEF launches The Reference, breaking new ground in computer-aided design. Every pair is still hand-built in Maidstone and matched to KEF's laboratory reference standard.
The LS3/5a mini monitor
The BBC-designed LS3/5a, built on KEF drivers, becomes the original mini monitor and one of the most influential small speakers ever made.
Uni-Q changes the game
KEF patents Uni-Q, the world's first truly coincident source driver, widening the listening area so everyone in the room hears the same detail.
The Blade
After engineers were told to build the ultimate speaker without design or cost limits, The Blade launches with KEF's Single Apparent Source configuration.
LS50 for the 50th anniversary
KEF brings the LS3/5a studio monitor idea into the living room with the LS50, which quickly becomes a modern hi-fi classic.
Metamaterial arrives
MAT debuts in the LS50 Meta and LS50 Wireless II, the first speakers anywhere to use metamaterial absorption.
The 12th generation
The current lineup runs on the 12th generation Uni-Q with MAT, from the hand-built Blade Meta and Reference Meta to wireless systems and architectural speakers.

KEF Muon: Sculpture That Plays Music
Muon is where KEF engineering meets the work of famed industrial designer Ross Lovegrove. Each speaker is fabricated from super-formed aluminium, using a moulding process KEF compares to the way high-performance sports cars are built. The result looks like art and measures like a KEF.
Muon is not a catalog speaker you order on a whim. Only 100 pairs exist, each signed by Lovegrove and individually serialized, and KEF handles the white-glove installation in your home itself. 239 Smart arranges the acquisition through KEF and designs the room, electronics, and control system around it, so the space is as considered as the speakers.
KEF Speakers for Naples Homes, Lanais, and High-Rises
Southwest Florida asks a lot of a speaker: humidity, salt air, concrete ceilings, and wide-open great rooms. KEF has a published answer for each.
IP64 rated
Bathrooms & Covered Lanais
KEF's Ci Q, C, and E series, Flush Mount, UltraThin, and SoundLights architectural speakers all carry IP64 certification, meaning they're dust-tight and protected against splashing water. That makes them a strong fit for humid bathrooms and covered lanai ceilings.
IP65 & salt spray
Pool Decks & Docks
The Ventura outdoor series is IP65 certified and salt spray tested for over 1,200 hours, with an all-metal, powder-coated build. The Ventura 6 is rated to operate from -40°F to 158°F. Gulf air is exactly what it was built for.
Under 36mm deep
Condos & Tight Ceilings
KEF's Ci-T UltraThin speakers need less than 36mm (about 1.4 inches) of mounting depth, which opens up real audio in high-rise condos and shallow ceiling cavities where a standard can won't fit.
How 239 Smart Designs a KEF System
A KEF speaker is engineered to a spec sheet. The install should be too.
Plan the Space
KEF publishes ideal and minimum rear volumes for its architectural speakers. We plan placement, coverage, and back boxes or rough-in frames around those numbers, in new construction or a finished home.
Match the Power
Impedance and power ratings vary across the range, so amplification is chosen per speaker: Denon receivers for theaters, multi-zone amps for distributed audio, and KASA500 for KEF in-wall subwoofers.
Integrate It
KEF wireless speakers have official drivers for Control4, Crestron Home, Savant, and NICE (ELAN) through KEF's partner Intrinsic Dev, and KEF's KW1 and KW2 kits can link subwoofers wirelessly. Everything runs on a network we build to handle it.
Tune and Verify
Crossovers, sub integration, room EQ, and levels get set on-site, then checked by ear and by measurement before we call it done.

KEF Questions We Hear in Naples
Is KEF really one of the best speaker brands?
It's on every serious audiophile's short list, and for good reason. KEF built drivers used in the BBC's LS3/5a monitor, patented the first truly coincident source driver (Uni-Q) in 1988, and introduced metamaterial absorption to loudspeakers in 2020. Its Reference pairs are matched within half a decibel to a lab standard. Few brands can claim that much original engineering.
Can I buy KEF speakers from 239 Smart's website?
No. As a KEF Approved Dealer, 239 Smart supplies KEF products as part of a designed and installed system. Every project starts with a conversation and a site visit, then we source the right models and install them. Request an estimate to get started.
Will KEF in-ceiling speakers hold up to Florida humidity?
KEF's Ci Q, C, and E series are IP64 certified for dust and splashing water, which suits bathrooms and covered lanais. For fully exposed outdoor spots near a pool or the water, we use the Ventura series, which is IP65 certified and salt spray tested for over 1,200 hours.
Can KEF speakers work with my existing Sonos or smart home system?
Usually, yes. Passive KEF architectural speakers can be powered by a properly matched amplifier, including Sonos amplification, so they join an existing Sonos setup. KEF's wireless speakers support AirPlay and Chromecast, and have official control drivers for Control4, Crestron Home, Savant, and NICE (ELAN). See our Sonos installation and smart home automation pages for how those systems fit together.
What does THX certified mean for a home theater?
THX certification means a speaker passed independent testing for output, distortion, and dispersion targets for a given room size. KEF's Extreme Theater in-wall and in-ceiling models are certified at THX Select, Ultra, and, on the flagship Ci5160REFM-THX, Dominus levels. Visit our TV mounting and home theater page for more on theater builds.
Can KEF speakers be added to a home that's already finished?
Yes. Most KEF architectural speakers install from below in existing drywall, and the UltraThin series needs less than 36mm of depth for tight spaces. KEF's wireless speakers need only power and a network connection. For new construction, rough-in brackets and back boxes go in before drywall so placement is locked in from day one.
