Why Smart Lighting and Automated Lighting Are the Best Upgrades You Can Make
Smart lighting is the single most noticeable smart home upgrade you can make. The moment you walk into a room and say "Alexa, turn on the lights" or tap a single scene on your phone that sets every light in the house to exactly where you want it, you wonder why you waited. Automated lighting takes it further. Lights that turn on when you walk into a room, turn off when you leave, dim at sunset, and simulate occupancy when you are 1,500 miles away. Smart LED bulbs last up to 25,000 hours, which works out to roughly 10 to 22 years of normal use. Compare that to a standard incandescent bulb that burns out after 1,000 to 2,000 hours and the math is not even close. Smart bulbs use up to 85% less energy, produce almost no heat, and never need a dimmer switch wired in because dimming is built into every bulb. Many homeowners see a 20 to 30 percent reduction in lighting costs after switching to automated smart lighting.
And the colors. Philips Hue puts 16 million colors at your fingertips. Not a handful of preset whites. Sixteen million. Warm golden sunset tones for dinner on the lanai. Cool daylight whites for the kitchen at 7 AM. Deep blues and soft purples for movie night. Whatever you want, whenever you want it, adjustable from your phone, your voice, or on a schedule that runs itself.
Automated Lighting for Snowbirds and Seasonal Residents
If you split your time between Naples and somewhere up north, automated lighting is not a luxury. It is a security system, an energy saver, and a convenience tool rolled into one. When you leave Southwest Florida for the summer, your home does not have to sit dark and obvious. Automated smart lighting lets you control every light in your house from 1,500 miles away, and it does it better than any timer you have ever plugged into an outlet. For complete coverage while you are away, combine automated lighting with 239 Smart Private Property Watch, our premium home watch service exclusively for Naples homeowners.
Can I control my lights remotely when I leave Naples for the summer?
Yes. With Philips Hue and a Hue Bridge, you have full control of every light in your home from anywhere in the world using the Hue app on your phone. Turn lights on, turn them off, dim them, change colors, and activate scenes. You can check which lights are on or off at any moment. If you are sitting in your living room in Connecticut in July and want to make sure the lanai lights are off at your place in Pelican Bay, it takes two seconds. No monthly subscription required for basic remote control through the Hue Bridge. Most other smart lighting brands, including Lutron Caseta, TP-Link Kasa, and Govee, also offer remote control through their own apps.
How does automated lighting make my home look occupied while I am away?
Automated lighting simulates occupancy far more convincingly than a mechanical timer. With Philips Hue, you can set randomized schedules that turn different lights on and off throughout the evening in different rooms at slightly different times, the way a real person actually lives. The kitchen light comes on at 6:15. The living room at 7:02. The bedroom at 9:47. The pattern changes every night. A timer plugged into one lamp in the front window fools nobody. Automated smart lighting fools everybody. Pair it with a Ring security system and your home in Grey Oaks, Mediterra, or Port Royal is monitored and lit like someone is home every single night you are away.
Can I turn on my lights before I arrive back in Naples?
Absolutely. Open the Hue app from the airport, the plane, or the car and turn on the house. Set the entryway to a warm white, the kitchen to full brightness, and the bedroom to a soft amber. By the time you pull into the driveway, your home feels like you never left. Clients coming back to their homes in Quail West and Fiddler's Creek do this every season. It is one of those small things that feels enormous when you walk through the door after months away.
Smart Lighting Brands We Install
We install and configure all major smart lighting brands. Every brand listed below is one we have hands-on experience with and can recommend based on your specific needs, budget, and smart home platform.
Philips Hue — Our Top Recommendation
Philips Hue is the industry leader in smart lighting and the brand we recommend most. The ecosystem is massive, the reliability is proven over more than a decade, and the compatibility list is unmatched. Hue bulbs offer 16 million colors with smooth, accurate color rendering across the entire spectrum. Standard bulbs are rated for 25,000 hours, which works out to 10 to 22 years of real-world use, and many users report their original Hue bulbs still working perfectly after 8 or more years. Hue is Energy Star certified, uses up to 85% less energy than incandescent bulbs, and works with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant, IFTTT, and Matter/Thread platforms. No other smart bulb brand matches that depth of compatibility.
The newest Hue bulbs support Matter and Thread natively, future-proofing your investment as the smart home industry standardizes. The Hue Bridge Pro supports up to 150 lights, serves as a Matter border router, and enables motion-aware lighting using compatible Hue fixtures as presence sensors with no additional hardware required. Hue White Ambiance bulbs let you shift from warm candlelight (2200K) to bright cool daylight (6500K) and everything in between. No subscription required for automations, scenes, schedules, or remote control.

Works with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and the Lutron Smart Bridge.

Smart Lighting and Automated Lighting Installation Services
Smart switch installation Naples FL
Replace your existing light switches with smart switches that you can control from anywhere. Smart switches work with your existing standard bulbs and control entire lighting circuits with one device. One switch, every bulb on that circuit, controlled by voice, phone, or automation. This is the most common smart lighting upgrade we do in homes throughout Pelican Marsh, Tiburón, and Audubon Country Club.
Smart dimmer installation Naples FL
Control both on/off and brightness levels from your phone or voice assistant. Create the perfect ambiance for any activity. Bright for cooking. Dimmed for conversation. Low and warm for winding down at night. Dimming also extends bulb life and saves energy.
Smart bulb installation Naples FL
For renters or homeowners who do not want to replace switches, smart bulbs offer an excellent plug-and-play solution. Smart bulbs are perfect for lamps, fixtures with multiple bulbs, or rooms where you want color-changing or tunable white light on a per-bulb basis. Philips Hue, LIFX, Govee, and Sengled all offer smart bulbs that screw into standard sockets with no wiring required.
Smart and automated outdoor lighting installation Naples FL
Southwest Florida outdoor spaces demand smart lighting. Between the lanais, pool cages, courtyards, driveways, and landscaping that define homes in communities like Esplanade, The Strand, and Isles of Collier Preserve, outdoor lighting is not optional. We install Philips Hue outdoor lights, smart floodlights with motion detection, color-changing landscape accent lighting, smart porch and entryway lights, pathway lighting, and pool and patio lighting. Automated outdoor lighting is especially valuable for snowbirds. Set your exterior lights to turn on at sunset and off at a randomized time every night, year-round, whether you are in town or not. Your home in Lely Resort looks lived-in and welcoming even in August.
Smart ceiling fan installation Naples FL
Control both fan speed and lighting independently with voice commands or your smartphone. "Alexa, turn on the bedroom fan to medium" or "Hey Google, dim the ceiling fan light to 30%." We install smart ceiling fans into existing fan-rated electrical boxes.
Complete home automated lighting systems
Upgrading your entire home? We design and install comprehensive automated lighting systems with consistent control through a single app or voice assistant. Smart switches in the hallways, bathrooms, and garage. Hue bulbs in the living room, bedroom, kitchen, and lanai. Outdoor lighting on automated sunset schedules. Motion-triggered lighting in closets, pantries, and bathrooms. Pair it with a smart thermostat and Ring security cameras and your entire home runs on a single voice command. Everything programmed, tested, and working before we leave.
Smart Switches vs. Smart Bulbs — How to Decide
Should I use smart switches or smart bulbs?
It depends on the room and what you want to accomplish.
Smart switches are best for:
∙ Built-in fixtures and overhead lights
∙ Homeowners making a permanent installation
∙ Rooms with multiple bulbs on one circuit, where one switch controls all of them
∙ Maximum reliability with any standard bulb type
Smart bulbs are best for:
∙ Lamps and portable fixtures
∙ Renters who cannot modify wiring
∙ Color-changing and tunable white lighting
∙ Individual per-bulb control and a budget-friendly starting point
Our recommendation: We typically install smart switches for permanent overhead fixtures and smart bulbs for lamps, accent lighting, and rooms where color or tunable white matters. In many homes across Port Royal, Pelican Bay, The Isles, and Tiburon, we install a combination of both for comprehensive coverage at every price point.
Automated Lighting Scenes and Schedules
Automated lighting scenes are where smart lighting goes from convenient to transformative. Instead of adjusting one light at a time, a single voice command, an app tap, or simply pulling into your driveway triggers every light in your home to go to exactly where you want it.
"Good Morning" — Lights gradually brighten to help you wake naturally. Bedroom lights start at 5% and slowly increase to 50% over 15 minutes. Kitchen and bathroom come on at a bright, energizing daylight white.
"Dinner" — Dining room dims to a warm 2700K at 70%. Kitchen drops to 40%. Living room sets to a soft amber glow for comfortable conversation.
"Movie Night" — Living room dims to 10%. Overhead lights turn off. TV bias lighting activates with Hue Play or Gradient Lightstrip. One command, perfect home theater ambiance. Pair it with a Sonos surround sound system and you have a true home theater experience.
"Goodnight" — Every light in the house turns off except the bedroom, which dims to 5% for five minutes and then shuts off. Exterior lights switch to the overnight security schedule. Activate with "Alexa, goodnight."
"Away Mode" — Randomized interior lighting mimics natural occupancy patterns. Exterior lights follow a sunset schedule. Perfect for snowbirds who want their home in Grey Oaks or Port Royal to look occupied from May through October.
239 Smart programs all of your scenes during installation so everything works from day one. We also walk you through how to create and modify your own scenes in the app.
Voice Control and Platform Compatibility
Every smart lighting system we install works with the major voice assistants and smart home platforms. You are never locked into a single ecosystem.
∙ Amazon Alexa — "Alexa, dim the living room lights to 30%" or "Alexa, turn on all the lights"
∙ Google Home — "Hey Google, turn off the lights" or "Hey Google, set the bedroom to 20%"
∙ Apple HomeKit / Siri — Control with Siri voice commands, add to Home app scenes, control from iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and HomePod
∙ Samsung SmartThings — Full integration with SmartThings routines and automations
∙ Home Assistant / Hubitat — Advanced local automation for power users and large smart home setups
∙ Matter / Thread — Future-proof cross-platform compatibility built into the newest Hue hardware and supported by an expanding range of devices

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between smart lighting and automated lighting?
Smart lighting gives you remote control over your lights through an app or voice assistant. Automated lighting takes it a step further by running on schedules, responding to motion sensors, adjusting based on time of day or sunrise and sunset, and simulating occupancy when you are away. Most smart lighting systems, including Philips Hue, support both. 239 Smart installs and programs both smart and automated lighting in every project.
How much does smart lighting installation cost in Naples, FL?
Pricing depends on the scope of the project. A simple setup with a few smart bulbs and a bridge starts at a very accessible price point. Whole-home systems with smart switches, outdoor lighting, and full scene programming are more involved. Most smart switch installations take 20 to 30 minutes per switch. Call (239) 970-9319 or submit a service request for a consultation and transparent quote with no hidden fees.
Do smart bulbs work with my existing light fixtures?
In most cases, yes. Philips Hue and other smart bulbs come in standard A19, BR30, GU10, and candelabra bases that fit the vast majority of residential fixtures. If your fixture uses a non-standard base, we identify the right solution during the consultation.
Do I need a Philips Hue Bridge?
Hue bulbs work over Bluetooth without a bridge, but the bridge unlocks the full feature set: remote access from anywhere, support for up to 50 lights (150 with Bridge Pro), automations, timers, and integration with Alexa, Google Home, and HomeKit. We strongly recommend the bridge for any installation beyond a single room.
Do I need a neutral wire for smart switches?
Many smart switches require a neutral wire (white wire) in the switch box. Older homes may not have neutral wires at every switch location. We assess your wiring during the consultation and recommend compatible products. Lutron Caseta does not require a neutral wire, which makes it an excellent option for older homes.
Can you install smart lighting with three-way switches?
Yes. Most smart lighting systems support three-way switch configurations where lights are controlled from two locations. We configure everything so the smart switch handles the automation and both switch locations work properly. In most setups, you end up controlling everything by voice, app, or automation anyway.
Will smart lighting work if my Wi-Fi goes out?
Yes. Smart switches still function as regular manual switches if Wi-Fi is unavailable. You lose voice control and app control until Wi-Fi is restored, but the lights themselves still turn on and off at the switch. Smart bulbs remain on their last setting. The exceptions are lights that run on Zigbee or Z-Wave, which operate locally on their own mesh network and do not require Wi-Fi to function.
Will smart lighting work during a power outage?
Smart bulbs and switches require power to operate, just like any light. When power is restored, Hue bulbs return to their last state or a default state you configure in the app. If you have a whole-home generator, which many homes in Naples do, your smart lighting continues to function normally during an outage.
Is smart lighting and automated lighting worth it for seasonal residents?
For snowbirds, automated lighting pays for itself in peace of mind alone. Remote control from anywhere, realistic automated occupancy simulation, energy savings from scheduled lighting, and the ability to light up your home before you arrive back in Naples make it one of the most practical smart home investments a seasonal resident can make. Combine it with an iFlo condensate line treatment to prevent A/C drain clogs while you are away and you have covered two of the biggest concerns for any Naples homeowner heading north for the season.
Will this work in my rental?
Smart bulbs are perfect for rentals because they require no wiring or permanent changes. Just screw them in and set them up with the app. For smart switches, some landlords allow installation if you agree to restore the original switches when you move out.
Does 239 Smart install other brands besides Philips Hue?
Yes. We install and configure Lutron Caseta, Govee, TP-Link Kasa, Leviton Decora Smart, GE/Jasco Z-Wave, LIFX, Sengled, and other brands. Hue is our top recommendation for color quality, lifespan, and ecosystem depth, but we always recommend what makes the most sense for your specific situation and budget.
