Wired (PoE) vs. wireless vs. solar: which one should you use?

This is the decision that determines how reliable your system will be years down the road, so it is worth understanding before anything gets mounted.

Wired PoE cameras (our recommendation for permanent coverage)

PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. A single Cat6 cable carries both data and power to the camera, so there is no separate power outlet and no battery to recharge. For a permanent home system, this is the most dependable approach: continuous recording, no dead batteries, no WiFi drops, and clean long-term reliability.

PoE comes in tiers, and matching the right tier to the camera matters. Here is what each one delivers, verified against the current IEEE standards:

The takeaway: a basic dome runs fine on standard PoE, but a motorized PTZ or a heated outdoor camera needs PoE+ or higher. If the power is undersized, the camera can brown out or reboot, and that often gets blamed on the camera when the real issue is the install. Wireless (WiFi) cameras

Wireless cameras connect over your home WiFi and still need a nearby power source unless they are battery powered. Solar cameras
